Lucy was a young Sicilian virgin whose father died, causing her mother to marry Lucy off to a wealthy pagan nobleman. Being consecrated to Christ, she chose not to marry. She was consequentially sentenced to the brothels, but she again wouldn’t be forced into what she knew was bad. When they came to take her away, she was as immovable as a mountain. Resolute. So they tortured her, gorging her eyes out.
And she became Lucy; Patron Saint of the Blind.
There are many variations on this tale from the Roman Catholic church. This is my interpretation.
